The Schroth Method: A Non-Surgical Approach to Spinal Correction
Named after Katharina Schroth, who developed the method in the 1920s to treat her own scoliosis, the Schroth method has become one of the most evidence-backed non-surgical approaches to spinal correction available today.
The Core Principle
Scoliosis creates a three-dimensional deformity — the spine curves laterally, rotates, and shifts the rib cage asymmetrically. Most conventional exercises treat the curve in only one plane. Schroth addresses all three dimensions simultaneously using rotational angular breathing (RAB), postural correction, and muscle activation.
What Happens During a Schroth Session?
- Postural assessment — the therapist identifies the patient's curve pattern and assigns a Schroth classification
- Elongation — the spine is lengthened to create space between the compressed vertebrae
- De-rotation — the rotated trunk is manually guided back toward a neutral position
- Rotational breathing — targeted breathing expands the concave (collapsed) side of the rib cage, pushing it outward while flattening the convex (prominent) side
- Muscle activation — the corrected position is held against resistance to retrain the supporting musculature
What Does the Evidence Say?
Multiple studies, including a landmark 2016 trial published in Scoliosis and Spinal Disorders, demonstrated that Schroth therapy combined with standard care reduced Cobb angles and improved quality of life significantly more than standard care alone in adolescent patients.
Who Is It For?
- Adolescents with curves between 10–45 degrees (during the growth phase)
- Adults seeking to manage pain and prevent progression
- Post-surgical patients working to maintain correction
- Patients currently in a RIGO brace (Schroth maximises brace effectiveness)
"Every spine is unique. That is why Schroth is not a one-size-fits-all protocol — it is a patient-specific program designed around each individual's curve pattern."
Our therapists are certified in the Barcelona Scoliosis Physical Therapy School (BSPTS) approach, a modern evolution of the original Schroth method developed by Dr. Manuel Rigo.
